Author Peter Jenkins Speaks at Luncheon
On October 5, a lucheon was held at the Blue Ribbon Circle by the Friends of the Argie Cooper Library. The guest speaker for this special occasion was Peter Jenkins. As most af you all know Peter Jenkins is the author of a best seller book, A Walk Across America. Before Peter Jenkins spoke at the Blue Ribbon Circle he was invited to meet with selected students here at SCHS.
Mr. Jenkins is a man of great humor. He told several humurous stories to the listeners. It took Mr. Jenkins and his dog Cooper five years to travel across America. As the two explorers entered into different communities they stayed with local citizens. While they were staying with these people they learned of their customs, heritages, and shared their daily life experiences.
Those attending the luncheon were the Leadership class and representatives from the ECHO Staff.
Longtime Local Reporter Honored
Monday night, November 30, Mr. Bo Melson was honored at a retirement reception on the upper level of the SCHS gym. Mr. Melson has been an employee of the Shelbyville Times--Gazette for nearly 39 years serving as sports editor and police beat reporter. Mr. Melson is well known among the young and the old for his love of photography and sports. If you have ever attended a game, whether it is in the summer, winter, spring or fall, more than likely you saw him on the side taking pictures and recording the details of all the action. As a result of his thorough coverage, Mr. Melson has received many awards for his outstanding news writing/photography.
Guests attending the pregame reception signed a book entitled Values of the Game that was later given to Mr. Melson as gift from the student council. Along with the register book, gifts from various other groups were given. The school presented Mr. Melson with season passes to the games, the coaches presented him with an outfit to wear to the ballgames, and finally, Mr. Mike Bone, the Superintendent of Bedford County Schools, presented him with a plaque in recognition of his service to education.
For many years Bedford Countians will fondly recall memories of sports moments provided by Bo Melson through his years of service to the community.
