
In August the first grade classes visit the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration grounds for a tour of the arena, barns, and to watch the horses working out. Despite the hot August heat, the students love to learn about the Tennessee Walking Horses.
Without a doubt the favorite classroom time in first grade is time spent at the computers. The first graders love to report to the computer during their reading or math time for some extra practice.
This year for Halloween the first grade students dressed as their favorite story book characters. There were princesses, kings, queens, ballerinas, and sports heroes everywhere you looked. The first grade teachers dressed as characters ffrom the Wizard of Oz.
Another exciting day in first grade classes is when the students bring their very favorite teddy bear from home. All day the students share their day with the teddy by reading stories about bears, of course, to their favorite bear.
Every year just before Thanksgiving the first grade teachers serve a feast to their students to end their unit of studying the First Thanksgiving. The teachers dress as either PIlgrims or Indians. The students, with the help of parent volunteers, make the fruit salad and mix up the cake.
In the spring the first grade classes visit the zoo at Grassmere. They enjoy seeing the exotic animals they have been reading about.
