Each year on March 2nd, the students and faculty of East Side Primary celebrate Read Across America Day. Mrs. Wood, wearing her favorite tall hat, kicks off the day by reading Green Eggs and Ham to the student body. The teachers and many of the students sport their striped hats as they listen to the first Dr. Seuss book of the day. Later all of the Kindergarten students sample green eggs and ham.
Our librarian, Mrs. Lamb, invites enough visiting readers so that every class has at least one person from the community come to read their favorite Dr. Seuss book. All visiting readers, of course, must wear the required striped hat while they are reading.
The goal of this day is to encourage students to read the books of Dr. Seuss. The second grade students get to put their name in a tall striped hat for each Dr. Seuss book they read during the week. Then on March 2nd, names are drawn out for Dr. Seuss t-shirts, books, stickers, and of course, striped hats.
First grade students make and wear Dr. Seuss hats all day. The first grade teachers pick their favorite Dr. Seuss book and read it to all the first grade classes.
It is a fun day for everyone, but not a very good hair day.
