The East Side Primary School's Parent-Teacher Organization seeks to promote a partnership between parents and the school that will benefit the children enrolled at East Side. Each year we sponsor several fundraising events, the most significant of which is our much-anticipated "Lap-rechaun Run." Scheduled on the Friday closest to St. Patrick's Day, the run features every child and faculty member in the school. Each runner collects pledges per lap run, and the annual event raises upwards of $12,000. Children love not only the run itself, but the prizes they can win for bringing donations.
Deciding how to spend the money we raise is the PTO's favorite task. We survey the teachers as to their wishes and then make a decision. In 1998-99 the PTO used its funds to purchase computer software forr the classrooms at East Side, provide each classroom teacher with money to purchase Accelerated Reader books for their classroom, and to provide $1,000 for the library.
The East Side PTO Executive Committee meets at 4:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month (except during the summer). At several meetings during the year, classes provide programs for a general meeting. All of the organization's meetings are open to anyone who is interested--we welcome input and participation from any parent or teacher.
