An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or pronoun. An adjective describes the noun or pronoun that follows it.

There are several kinds of adjectives:

Predicate adjectives are presented after a linking verb and modify the subject of the sentence. Predicate adjectives do not appear before the noun or pronoun they modify as most adjectives do. Instead they are found in the predicate of the sentence. The predicate of the sentence explains what is being stated about the subject or it contains the action of the sentence in relation to the subject.

Ex. This is a great newspaper!

Create your own example: Our English book is  ____________.

Articles are also considered to be adjectives. Articles are placed before the nouns or pronouns they modify. Common articles include a, an, and the.

Ex.  The book in my book bag is heavy.

Fill in the blanks: I went to __ classroom to get a book.

Possessive adjectives are possessive pronouns placed before nouns they modify. Examples of possessive adjectives are her, our, their, and your.

Ex.  My coat is torn.

Demonstrative adjectives are demonstrative pronouns placed before nouns they modify. Examples of demonstrative adjectives are this, that, these, and those.

Ex.  This book is the most interesting one that I've ever read!

Indefinite adjectives are indefinite pronouns placed before nouns they modify. Examples of indefinite adjectives are any, each, every, and some.

Ex.  Every student in this line should be quiet and not disturb others.

Using Commas with adjectives:

A comma is used between adjectives when they modify the same noun and when rearranging the adjectives does not alter the
meaning of the sentence.

She gave me some beautiful, red roses.

If the first adjective modifies both the subsequent adjective(s) and the noun at the same time, no comma is used between the
adjectives.

My sister likes big bright red roses.

***Tip: If rearranging the adjectives changes the meaning of the sentence, commas should not be used.
