WRITING A BOOK REVIEW
Goal: An Accelerated Reader Lesson to improve reading skills and promote the love of reading.
Objectives:
TSW read a selection of literature.
TSW identify the elements of literature including theme, characters, setting, plot, conflict resolution, mood, and purpose.
TSW examine the book review and define its purpose.
TSW summarize the literary selection.
TSW critique the literary selection.
TSW use art media to design a book jacket.
TSW write a book review.
Procedure:
1. TSW select an Accelerated Reader title from the school's approved lists of social studies, science, physical education, or math related books.
2. TSW read the selected Accelerated Reader book.
3. TSW show mastery of knowledge of book's content by completing an Accelerated Reader test using the school's networked program.
4. TSW identify literary elements of the book by completing idea web showing theme, characters, setting, plot, conflict resolution, mood, and purpose.
5. TSW identify the book review form of summarization and critiquing during lesson by the school's media specialist.
6. TSW examine, under teacher supervision, book reviews of well-known and appropriate juvenile and young adult literature on Amazon.com web site.
7. TSW write a summary of the book.
8. TSW write a personal opinion of the book.
9. TSW combine summarization and personal critique to form original book review of the student's selection.
10. TSW create a book jacket for the book using various art media practiced throughout the year.
11. TSW write final draft of book review.
12. TSW submit book jacket and review to supervising teacher team.
13. The teacher team will select top five book jackets with reviews to post on school's web site and/or to be submitted for possible inclusion in school newspaper, the education page in local paper, and/or to the school's PTO newsletter.
Evaluation:
TSW pass an accelerated book test over the chosen book.
TSW be graded using a rubric will be used to grade the book jacket and book review as followed:
