History

Liberty School is located at 500 Snell Road in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the county seat of Bedford County. Liberty School was formed in 1977 when the schools of Flat Creek, Pleasant Grove, Shelbyville Mills, and Wheel were combined.

The school has been led by four administrators during its 21 year history. Mr. William Wayne Boyd served as principal from 1977-1980. Mr. Bernard Bydalek, Jr., assumed the leadership in 1980 and served in this capacity until his death in 1989. From 1989-1993, Mr. Frank Edwards was the principal of Liberty School. Mr. Edwards was succeeded by Mr. Mike Bishop, who continues to serve in that role.

Presently, there are 583 students enrolled in Liberty School in grades K-8. There has been a significant increase in enrollment each year since the school’s beginning. As a result, a building program was completed in 1999. The new addition contains classrooms for K-3rd grades and offices.
