Animal Classification Activity for 4th Grade Science

Scientists have divided animals into different groups, or classifications, so that it is easy to study them. After you complete this activity, you will be an expert at classifying animals! Be sure to complete all the activities in order. You will need to download this page from the Internet to record your answers if your teacher does not provide you with a copy. Good luck!

Draw five different shapes on your record sheet. Can you develop your own way to put them into different categories, or classifications? You must have a system to group the items! Record your system of classification on your record sheet.

Scientists look for ways that animals are alike in the same way that you looked for ways the items you drew were the same.

Look at the following three sites to learn about the classification of animals. After you have looked at these sites, you will complete a Scavenger Hunt on animal classification.

  1. Go here to learn about the history of classifying animals.
  2. This site will guide you through the five classifications of animals.
  3. Use this site to look up the classification of a gray wolf.

Now you are ready to go on a Scavenger Hunt! You will look at the Internet to find lots of interesting information about animals. Click here to go to the Safari!
