Food Chain

5th Grade Activities

Look at the picture above. It is an example of a simple food chain. The frog eats the fly to help it survive. This page will help you learn about food chains and food webs. Follow the steps in order. Print this page to record your answers if your teacher does not give you a copy.

Look at each of the following web sites. They will help you understand what food chains are and how they work. Take notes and staple them to your record sheet to help you remember the information you find.

1) Go to http://science.coe.uwf.edu/SH/Curr/foodchain/foodchain.htm

Answer these questions on your record sheet.

  1. What is a food chain?
  2. Tell how the sun, grass, rabbit, and fox are all connected.

2) Next, look at http://library.advanced.org/11353/food.htm

List the four main parts of a food chain.

3) Your last site to check is http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/curr/science/core/8thgrd/integrated/Biology/chains.htm

Write a definition for each word.

  1. Producer 2) Consumer 3) Decomposer

Look at the list of organisms on the web page and identify them as producers, consumers, or decomposers. Record your answers on your record sheet.

Now you are ready to go on a Scavenger Hunt about food chains. Go to each site below to find the answers to the questions. When you are finished, turn your record sheet in to your teacher.
