Native American

Activity for 5th Grade

Native Americans have made many contributions to North American history, culture, and day to day life. You will work with a group to research one Native American group. You will be responsible for finding the following information.

Location, including a map

Type of Shelter and how it was built

Type of Clothing and how it was made

Special Customs or Ceremonies

Type of Food and how it was obtained

Natural resources relied on

Art or Craft forms

You may present your information to the class as a short television program, an interview with a member of the Native American group, a short skit, or another creative way your group chooses. Your presentation must include a poster and simple model that represents some of the information you discovered. Be sure to include all of the information above.

You may choose one of the following Native American groups to research. Each group must choose a different topic.

Apache

Lakota Sioux

Cherokee

Seminole

Creek

Zuni

Iroquois

Ojibwa

Navajo (Dine')

Hopi

Tlinglit

Surf the following sites to find information for your Native American Nation.

Native American Housing Types

American Indians WWW Virtual Library

Native Web (Type in Nation's name)

Tribal Histories

Native American Nations

Native American Website for Children

Be sure to search under your tribe's name.

Since we will not be able to make group presentations on all of the Native American nations, work with your group to complete the Native American Sampler. Your group must choose four activities.

Would you like to earn extra credit? Pick one of these Native American recipes. Make it at home with your family. Bring it to class to share.

Teachers, check out the Native American Resources page for additional information.
