A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

A BIG Welcome to the families of our returning students and to the families of

our new students. Welcome back to Ms. Sandra Holmes and welcome to Ms. Monica

Graves and Ms. Terri Massengill. Ms. Holmes and Ms. Graves are teaching the

6th grade and Ms. Massengill is our new music teacher. Ms. Sarah Counts is back with

us as a Guidance Counselor. Mr. Chris Clemens will be starting today as a student teacher with Ms. Limbaugh. He will be with us for eight weeks.

We want your child to be happy and successful at Broadview and believe that parents play a key role. That role is to continually show interest in and support for your child. The child who knows that his or her family is interested in and supports the school program will usually have fewer problems in school and will enjoy greater success.

We believe in fair and consistent discipline that encourages students to be responsible

for themselves. At Broadview, we want to create a safe environment where courtesy and kindness prevail and where there is respect shown for every person in our school.

Something to think about: The goal of discipline in the schools is to ensure the safety of students and staff and to create an environment conducive to learning. Discipline in the school will set the stage for a positive learning environment.

Remember to observe the dress code. If you are not sure exactly what you child can wear, we have sent a copy of the dress code home with your child. Children should not wear or bring chains to school. They will be taken up.

Be sure to look at the packet of materials sent home, sign and return to school as soon as possible. Please share with your child’s teacher any information regarding his or her special needs that will help us better serve him or her. We believe that communication among parents, students and teachers is critical in assuring student success.

PLEASE get your child to school on time. With our class schedule, school begins at 8:00 AM. Attendance is counted not only in hours, but also in minutes. Bringing a child in late or taking them out early will count against them in terms of days absent. They will also be missing valuable instruction time. I do not think that a child’s day goes as smoothly if their class has already started when they arrive. The teacher does not have the time to go back and catch your child up if he/she is late. If your child gets to school after 8:00 he/she must be signed in by the adult who brings that child to school. He/she will need to pick up and fill out a tardy slip in the office before they will be admitted to class. Parents will need to fill out the slips for the smaller children.

Your child’s teacher will be busy taking lunch count, attendance and etc. around 8:00.

This is NOT a good time to meet with her. I have asked them to schedule a time to meet

other than first thing in the morning. Please call the office and we will work together to arrange a time for you to meet. After the first few days let your child go to class by themselves.

Remember that in order to provide a safe environment we must know who is in the

building at all times. You cannot visit your child’s classroom without having signed in at the front office and getting a visitor’s tag. Please park to the side of the building and come in through the front door, not the gym. Please display your pickup number in the window of your car so that we can identify you and get your child quickly, without you having to wait, do not park and walk to get your child. If you do not have a pick up number, come in and see Ms. Bucher. I want to remind you again of our traffic situation. If you do not want to wait in line and still run the risk of being late, try to get your child to school before 7:45. Remember that there is no one on duty after 3:30 so you must arrange for your child to be picked up before that time.

If the stop sign is out on the bus, do not go around that bus. Children from the Jr. High will be crossing the road to get to their parent’s car. ALWAYS be on the "lookout" for the safety of our students.

The head lice policy remains the same. Your child will not be allowed to stay in school

or to return until his/her head is completely free of Nits. If sent home the child must come by the office to be checked before he/she is allowed to return to school.

If your child requires any medication of any type you must come by the school and

sign a form and write down the instructions. Teachers are not allowed to give any

medications nor are they allowed to keep medications in the room.

We want to encourage you to keep in contact with us and to be part of our school by

becoming involved in our BPO, coming to ballgames, and volunteering your talents

if there is something special that you can do with our children.

Do not let your children bring toys to school. They create a disturbance. The first time

they will receive a warning and then after that the toy will be taken up until the

parent comes in to pick it up.

Three more sets of bleachers have been ordered for the gymnasium. We were able to

do this with money from the "Eagle Walk A Thon"! We hope to get more bookcases

for the library this year.

I want to thank all of the parents who came to school to help us move furniture and get

the school ready for the new year. You are appreciated. Thanks to Frankie Taylor and Pat Martin for hooking up the sound system in the gym. It is a big help when calling out

pick up numbers and having programs.

Notice the new look we have in the front office. We are very appreciative of Dr.

Edmonds for the improvements he has made at Broadview.

Hi from the Library! I hope this proves to be another successful year for our Accelerated Reader program. We have discovered that an excellent way to help our library grow as well as please our families and friends is to donate a book to our library in their honor or in memory of a loved one. Please remember that these books can be purchased through our library. Books that are purchased in memory of loved ones are especially nice. Please keep this in mind. You will soon be getting notification of how you may donate books in honor of your children’s birthdays. Their name will go in the front of the book along with their birth date, and the book will be enjoyed for many, many years to come by Broadview students. We have already had books donated this school year! Thank you very much! Accelerated Reader books have been purchased from our library in memory of Mrs. Pearl Williams, in memory of Mrs. Amelia Martin, and in honor of Mrs. Verle Irvine by Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Prince. AR books have been purchased in memory of Mrs. Louise Bean, in memory of Mr. Kamille Brodioi, in memory of Mr. Howard Cox, Sr., and in memory of Mrs. Jeanette Spaulding. We very much appreciate these donations to our library. Letters acknowledging these purchases have been sent to the families. Bethany Welch has donated some books from her home collection. Thanks, Bethany!

News from the BPTO: Welcome back! We hope everyone had a great summer.

We would like to kick off the new school year by inviting everyone to our first meeting of the year. For those of you who are new to Broadview, the BPTO (Broadview Parent Teachers Organization) is the school’s organization that raises money to help out the school whenever the need arises. Last year we were able to install a new sound system in the cafeteria, add a piece of equipment to playground and to purchase much-needed books for the library. We feel that this organization is a great way for parents to become involved with their child’s future as well as see that they have the needed equipment/supplies/facilities to enhance their learning here at Broadview. On August

21st, (Tuesday) at 6:30 PM our first official meeting of the 2001-2002 school year will be held in the school in the cafeteria. We would like to invite everyone to come. We will have light refreshments. Election will be held for any new positions needed. Please join us. We strive to keep our meetings focused and not to exceed one hour. We hope to see

you Tuesday night. Frankie Taylor

News from PE-Students must wear tennis shoes and appropriate seasonal clothing for gym class. Shorts, jeans and jogging suits (during winter months) are acceptable. Check your child’s schedule for his/her P.E. day and make sure that they are dressed properly

to participate in physical activities. Broadview Eagles and Junior Pro information will be sent home soon.

We do have a few school shirts left if you are interested in purchasing one. They are
