The Birth of
Grundy County, Tennessee

Grundy County was created in 1844 from portions of
Coffee, Warren, and Franklin counties. It was named
in honor of Felix Grundy (1777-1840). Grundy served
as chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court. After
moving to Tennessee, he was elected to the U.S.
Congress and served as a Senator of his new state
home. He was later appointed U.S. Attorney General
under President Martin Van Buren.
