Technology

History of the Department

In 1993, with the State Departments move toward implementing technology into the schools across the state, Daryl Brown was named Technology Director for the Grundy County Schools. During this initial phase, fourteen 21st Century Classrooms were implemented across Grundy County. Those teachers were trained to use the equipment placed in their classrooms. Those classrooms are as follows: GCHS--Chris Price (later given to Samantha Stevens), Judi Brown, and Karen Dickerson; Coalmont Elementary School--Rick Rust; North Elementary School--Bonnie Rieben, Sylvia Lusk; Palmer Elementary School--Dennis Mainord; Pelham Elementary School--Mike Oliver; Swiss Memorial elementary School--Christine Stockwell, Ed Bowen (later given to John Rogers; Tracy City Elementary School--Cordell Newsome, Rod Harrison (later given to Donna Kerstetter, Tina Arbuckle (later given to Franklin Hill).

Each school library was provided with a multimedia computer station with access to the internet by modems.

The Student Management System was successfully implemented in each school. This meant that hardware and software was provided to maintain attendance records.

The school system at this time had approximately 50 working computers and only 7 had interent access. As the teacher training and staff development programs progressed, more and more classrooms were equipped with computers. In 1996, Martha Nixon was placed as the Technology Director. At present there are approximately 400 computers in the system and more than 175 have internet access. Thanks to numberous grants, every classroom is wired for the internet and computers are being upgraded to make the internet a tool in every classroom.

In May of 1997, a group of teachers and administrators were named to serve as a Technology Curriculum Team. This concept, in itself, lends a new dimension of credibility to the planning for technology in classrooms in Grundy County. The team is composed of primarily teachers representing all seven schools in Grundy County. The current team is as follows: (You may click a name to send email to him/her.)
