Kathy Halverson

Kathy Halverson, thirty two year old, who raced once in the 1989 Iditarod®. She played an important part in the Iditarod history. Halverson and several others gave up a chance to win rookie of the year to help Mike Madden. Mike had collapsed on a part of the trail between Ophir and Iditarod. He was treated by a small group of mushers until help arrived. Kathy and others were given a special award for their selflessness on the trail.
Kathy became acquainted with dog sledding through her husband. She traveled the trail observing mushers and observing their expertise for a few years before deciding to give it a try. That is who Kathy Halverson is, and her part in Iditarod history.
