Kathy Halverson

By Jessica

Kathy Halverson, thirty two year old, who raced once in the 1989 Iditarod®. She played an important part in the Iditarod history.  Halverson and several others gave up a chance to win  rookie of the year to help Mike Madden.  Mike had collapsed on a part of the trail between Ophir and Iditarod.  He was treated by a small group of mushers until help arrived.  Kathy and others were given a special award for their selflessness on the trail.

Kathy became acquainted with dog sledding through her husband.  She traveled the trail observing mushers and observing their expertise for a few years before deciding to give it a try.  That is who Kathy Halverson is, and her part in Iditarod history.
