Established as a national monument in 1978; and a national park in 1980. Kobuk Valley National Park is enclosed by the Baird and Waring Mountains. It has about 1,750,000 acres. The park is partially forested and is typicalof the broad transition zone between forest and tundra.  The siteof Stonewall Jackson's (Oolyak) cabin and camp is being eroded by the KobukRiver.
