Mayor George Maynard

by: Jessica

George Maynard was the mayor of Nome in 1925.  He was asked to close the schools and movie house because a boy named Richard had a deadly disease called Diphtheria.  Medicine was needed within two weeks to treat the disease.  Mayor Maynard closed everything down so no one else would be exposed to the disease.  At a town meeting Mayor George Maynard suggested that if the serum were located in Alaska, perhaps a daring pilot could fly it from Fairbanks to Nome.  It was decided that dog teams would be more reliable in the cold Alaska weather.  So they used that plan and it worked.
