Bowhead Whale
By:  Chelsea

Bowhead whales are the only ones that spend their entire life in sea ice water.  They don’t even migrate to warmer waters to calve.  They are very equipped to stay in arctic and subarctic waters- they have blubber up to 1-1/2 feet thick.  They have thick craniums for breaking ice.
There were over 50,000 bowhead whales worldwide.  Bowhead whales decreased to 30,000 to 1,000 whales between 1600s and 1800s.  The population increased to around 6,400 to 9,200 in 1992.
