Balto

Mrs. Shrum's 5th Grade class
Balto was a famous sleddog. He was born in 1922
and saved many lives in his life. He started his life-taking miners to
and from the coalmines. One cold night in 1925 children and older people
started getting very sick with diphtheria. The problem was they had no
more serum for the sickness. So the next morning mushers and dogs set off
for Anchorage, Alaska to get the medicine. Balto was half wolf and half
Alaskan Malamute. Many mushers did not want Balto because he was half wolf.
But finally Gunnar Kasson took him. He made it to Anchorage and back. He
saved many lives. The 1st city was Nome where they started then 2nd they
got to the safety, 3rd Bluff, 4th Golovin,5th Shaktoolik, 6th Kaltag, 7th
Koyukuk, 8th Ruby, 9th Tolovana, 10th Nenana and last Anchorage. Now there
is a statue of Balto in New York for his heroic actions. In 1933 Balto
died at the age of 11. Now he is stuffed in the Cleveland Museum of Natural
