Barrow, the Northernmost community in North America is located on the
Chucki sea coast. However, there is a canyon in Barrow, called Barrow
Canyon. Barrow Canyon stretches through northeast –southwest through
the earth’s surface. It is about 20 miles north of Barrow.
Barrow Canyon is covered with sea ice for up to 10 months of the year,
and it shows no dramatic scenery below.
The canyon is a simple example of a submarine canyon, an underwater
gorge. It looks like a deep, stream-cut valley. The word “submarine”
refers exclusively to the fact that it is underwater. Barrow Canyon
was actually used by a nuclear powered submarine.
