Mrs. Ward's 5th Grade Class

The Trans Alaskan Pipeline was completed in 1977. It cost 10 billion dollars to build.  The first pipe was laid March 27, 1975.  The oil started flowing June 20, 1977.  The only way to get crude oil from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez was the pipeline.  The pipeline is used by 7 companies, BP, ARCO, Exxon, Mobil, Armerada, Hess, Phillips, Unocal.  There are 11oil pumps but only 6 are in use.  There are 80 check valves.  The pipe has a 48-inch diameter.  The max operation pressure is 1180 pounds per square inch.  The oil flow can stop in 4 minutes.  The average amount of oil put through a day is 1,435, 000 barrels full.  The most oil ever put through a day was 2, 145, 297 barrels full on January14, 1988.  The time it takes oil to travel through the pipeline is 6.2 days at 5.4 mph.
We hope you learned a lot of information about the Trans Alaska Pipeline.
