Joe Redington was born in Oklahoma on February 1, 1917.  He died on June 12, 1999 at he age of 82.  He said he wanted to race at the 2000 Iditarod ® Race.  He was well known as the Father of the Iditarod.  He decided to organize a successful race to honor the brave dogs who brought the medicine back to Nome.  The sled race is over 1000 miles long.  Joe Redington knew Dorothy Page who gave him the idea of starting the Iditarod dog sled race.
