Located in the northern part of Sumner county, Westmoreland is a rural town with a population of about 2,037. In the late 1970's, a move began within the community to build a new high school which would house grades 9-12. This move began as a result of the extremely crowded conditions the high school was experiencing as a grade 7-12 facility. The goal was to build a new campus for the high school housing grades 9-12 while renovating the old high school building for use as a middle school housing grades 6-8. This goal was achieved in 1988 with the beginning of the new school year.
Westmoreland Middle School, the only middle school in the community, serves children in grades 6-8. There are three feeder schools: Bethpage Elementary, North Sumner Elementary, and Westmoreland Elementary. Current enrollment for the middle school stands at 370 for the three grades. The school has a staff of 41 who work hard to provided a stable environment and strong curriculum to meet the total needs of the students.
