I
know everyone has heard of the feuding clans of the Hatfields and McCoys
of eastern
Kentucky. But what you may not know is
we have a descendant of the Hatfields amongst us right
here at BHS. Greta Helms’ mother is Katherine
Hatfield Scott who still lives in Pike County,
Kentucky.
"Ms.
Greta" says the whole feud has really been blown out of proportion.
We can understand
that knowing "Ms. Greta" and her family would
never be in any feud. You’ll never meet a more
peaceable or sweeter person than "Ms. Greta".
"Ms.
Greta" is originally from McCarr in Pike County, Kentucky. She received
her bachelor’s
degree in geography and history from Eastern
Kentucky University. She taught eight years for the
Jefferson County school system in Louisville,
Kentucky. Her parents, brother, and sister still live in
Kentucky.
"Ms.
Greta" met her husband, Ken, in high school where they both played in the
school band.
They have been married for 31 years. He
is the Perishable Food Manager for the Kroger Company
opening stores and helping stores with problems
in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
The Helms’ have one son, James, who is 23.
They attend the Raleigh Primitive Baptist Church.
They lived in Kentucky and Virginia many years.
They have called West Tennessee home for the last 23
years—18 in Memphis and five in Munford. They are very proud now
to call Tipton County home.
When
we asked "Ms. Greta" what she liked best about BHS she said, "Everything
and everyone. It’s a great place to
work. We have the most wonderful students. Our faculty, staff,
and
administrators are all great. The librarian
is a great person to work for and with each day. I love my
job and the people I’m with each day."
Her
goals for the future are to learn all she can about everything in order
to help others, to learn more about the library,
and to learn everything she can about computers.
Her
hobbies are reading historical novels and biographies, cooking, and making
pecan and
chocolate chip pies to give as gifts for friends.
