The Astronomers -- 6 Video Tapes
  1. Where Is The Rest of the Universe?  (55 Min.) -- Astronomers believe the universe contains at least ten times as much mass as can be seen and accounted for. How they are able to detect this missing mass and to discover more about it are the subjects of this episode. Astronomers Vera Rubin and Tony Tyson describe their search for dark matter, material invisible to us but whose gravity affects the motion of stars and can alter the light reaching us from distant galaxies. In addition, John Dobson, a self-proclaimed "sidewalk astronomer," shares his knowledge with people he encounters.
  2. Searching for Black Holes (57 Min.) -- At the center of galaxy NGC 1275, some 200 million light years from earth, there might be a supermassive black hole. In an attempt to map the galaxy and look deep into its heart, an international team of astronomers has linked radio telescopes throughout Europe and America in order to produce a picture of NGC 1275. Jessie Greenstein, the co-discoverer of quasars, and Italian radio astronomer Tiziana Venturi appear.
  3. A Window to Creation (57 Min.) -- American and Japanese astronomers are followed as they seek to measure cosmic background radiation, the heat remaining from the big bang, by launching rockets and satellites above the earth's atmosphere. Their results contribute to research into the origins of the universe. Also shown are two astronomers who are mapping the universe in 3-D and discovering that galaxies have formed into gigantic groups.
  4. Waves of the Future (56 Min.) -- Gravity waves, as yet undetected but predicted by Albert Einstein, may contain the answers to many questions about the universe. Soviet scientist Leonid Grishchuk and American scientist Kip Thorne describe their attempts to prove the existence of the waves. The episode also vists a gravity-wave detector prototype and describes the three-mile-long full-scale version, planned for construction in the late 1990s. Grishchuk and scientist Stephen Hawking meet.
  5. Stardust (56 Min.) -- The deaths of stars allow human lives to come into being. This episode explains how and looks at the complete life cycle of the stars that make up our galaxy. Two American scientists are shown researching the forces that bring gas and dust together with such intense pressure that nuclear fusion results and a star is born. Hans Bethe, the first scientist to explain in detail how stars are fueled, appears. Three Australian scientists look into the death of a star by studying the remains of the supernova explosion of 1987.
  6. Prospecting for Planets (60 Min.) -- Efforts to discover other planetary systems and to learn more about the planets of our own solar system are examined. Images are shown that have been sent back to earth by Voyager, the space probe exploring the outer edges of the solar system.

Nova:  In Search of Human Origins (WGBH Educational Foundation) (60 Min.Each)

Don Johanson retraces history to discover answers to the mystery of the sudden transformation fifty thousand generations ago of the hunter-gatherers then living in Africa, in which they began to paint, carve, talk, travel, trade and bury their dead.

  1. Episode One -- The Story of Lucy -- In 1974, Johanson unearthed Lucy, at almost 3 million years of age, our oldest human ancestor.  Lucy's tiny three-and-a-half-foot-tall skeleton set the world of paleoanthropology on its ear by showing that walking upright, not a larger brain, was the key factor that separated us from the ape.  In this episode, Johanson recounts his discovery and the important information it continues to generate.  We join him as he returns to the site in Ethiopia and makes an exciting new find that sheds light on the relationship between the sexes and the birth of the nuclear family.
  2. Episode Two -- Surviving in Africa -- In a unique way, Johanson sets out to disprove the long-cherished view that early man's large brain and reliance on technology are the by-products of the ability to hunt.  He embarks on a journey across the Serengeti savanna of East Africa in search of food.  He finds it--not by hunting but by scavenging off the leftovers of lions and leopards.  In the process he proves it takes cunning and intelligence to steal a meal from these skilled predators, without becoming a meal himself.
  3. Episode Three -- The Creative Revolution -- Fifty thousand generations ago, a dramatic change swept through the hunter-gatherers then living in Africa.  They began to paint, carve, talk, bury their dead, travel and trade.  What accounts for this sudden transformation?  The question continues to be at the heart of heated debates.  Some scientists feel it can be explained only by a mass genocide in which a group of superior human beings spread out of Africa, replacing more primitve ancestors along the way.  Johanson retraces their voyage to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Leonardo da Vinci:  Renaissance Man to the World (The History Makers)(Madacy Entertainment) (45 Min.)

No man better fits the term Renaissance Man than this illegitimate son of a notary in the small Italian village of Vinci.  Leonardo da Vinci's countless accomplishments include pioneering work in the field of human anatomy, the invention of the helicopter and creation of the world's most famous painting, the Mona Lisa.  His statue of a horseman was considered to be the greatest work of sculpture in the world when it was completed in 1493.  Unfortunately, it was destoryed in 1500.  Among his surviving works of art are the Last Supper and the Mona Lisa.  Da Vinci was also a brillian engineer.  He studied the flight of birds and designed parachutes and flying machines.  His studies of the human body led to a comprehensive atlas of the muscles, bones, and organs.  He designed underwater breathing systems, hydraulic motors, advance flood control systems, and was a pioneer in the study of light and senses.  Advances and invention in the years since his death have served to substantiate the impressive and progressive nature of Leonardo da Vinci's intellectual capacity.  It is no exaggeration to call him the greatest creative mind of all times.
