Fetal Alcohol Syndrome:  Life Sentence (Films for the Humanities & Sciences) (24 Min.) 

Fetal alcohol syndrome is the result of permanent organic injury to the brain of the fetus, caused by maternal drinking during pregnancy.  That injury leads to learning disabilities, poor judgment, antisocial behavior, and worse, if a recent study is correct.  This program discusses FAS within the contest of that study that suggests that 20 to 25 percent of all prison inmates may suffer from the condition.  The program examines how early identification and treatment of children with FAS can help prevent extreme antisocial behavior in adulthood.

Looks at teenage use of marijuana and the damage it does to individuals, using frank talk and solid information to discourage use.  It is a thought-provoking documentary-style program with a simple message:  using marijuana is unhealthy, dangerous, illegal, psychologically addictive, and emotionally debilitating.  Above all, the program effectively dispels the myth that marijuana is a benign drug with little or no serious side effects.

Introduces your students to some common misconceptions about dieting and helps them identify the real culprits in their own indivdual lifestyles that may be causing them to gain weight or get out of shape.  The video is divided into two sections, approximately 15 minutes each.  The first, on nutrition, contains a mini-report on "fast food" restaurants in the modern teen's diet.  The second focuses on the importance of physical activity in a well-balanced program of weight management.

 This tape reveals numerous examples of dangerous food handling including cross contamination of tools and surfaces, lack of hand washing, use of containers ill-suited to food storage, poor microwave safety, careless handling of poultry, and failure to keep foods in a safe temperature zone.  Viewers learn the basics of preparing and storing food safely.  They learn how to avoid salmonella contamination and understand the need to take precautions in handling food.

    1. The Power of Choice (60 Min.) -- Counselor Michael Pritchard  shows young people how to be V.I.P.’s to use Vision, Initiative, and Perspective as tools for making good choices. 
    2. Acting On Your Values (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard talks with students to discover how knowing what we value can guide us in making choices that are right for us.  It is a candid exploration of the values on which today’s teens base their lives, where those values come from, and what meaning they have, as teenagers grow toward adulthood. 
    3. Self-Esteem (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard and students consider what self-esteem is, what it does for us, and how we can tap into it.  The underlying message of this show is that good self-esteem leads to good choices, and good choices lead to great self-esteem. 
    4. Coping With Pressures (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard and high school students talk about the pressures they face, from academic competition to peer acceptance and parental expectations.
    5. Drugs and Alcohol--Part 1 (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard encourages teenagers to come to grips with the question of what to do when "just say no" and "just say yes" just won’t do.  Students talk openly and honestly about the choices (good and bad) they have made with alcohol and drug use. 
    6. Drugs and Alchohol--Part 2 (30 Min.) -- Drugs and Alcohol Part II – Michael Pritchard and students examine how chemical abuse damages relationships, what you can and cannot do about it, and how to respond when a chemically dependent person asks you for help.  It is a useful and enlightening look at what to do when someone you care about is hooked. 
    7. Drinking and Driving (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard and teenagers talk about how to stay out of (or get out of) drinking/driving predicaments and still be cool. 
    8. Sex (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard encourages teenagers to think more critically about their attitudes and approaches to sexual behavior.  Students consider the thorny issues they face in making decisions about sex, and grapple with the question of how to make choices tonight that you can live with tomorrow. 
    9. Friendship and Dating (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard and high school students take a heart-warming look at how to create and maintain quality relationships. 
    10. Depression and Suicide (30 Min.) -- This program presents a clear minded look at what to do if you or someone you care about is at risk.  Host Michael Pritchard and teens identify the signs frequently exhibited by people who are at risk for suicide and discuss the recommended procedures for intervening.  In addition, they  examine ways of coping with the depression and stress that often lead to suicide, and encourage people to ask for help when they feel themselves at risk. 
    11. Communicating With Parents (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard visits high schools to explore the critical issue of teen-parent communi- cations.  Through probing dialogue and hypothetical situations, they examine some of the ways in which family communication gets blocked, and consider what kinds of choices they can make to improve the situation. 
    12. Raising Your Parents (30 Min.) -- Michael Pritchard and high school students take on the age old question of how to make their relationship with their parents work better.  By defining what they want in their relationship with their parents, and examining how their own actions affect that relationship, these  teenagers uncover some of the keys to getting what they want in the teen/parent alliance.
