Soccer Geometry

You may want to use a soccer ball for this exercise.

1. What shape is a soccer ball?

2. What polygons are on a soccer ball?

3. Are they regular polygons?

4. How many diagonals can be drawn in the polygons?

5. What is the sum of the angle measures of the polygons?

6. A soccer ball measures 27 to 28 inches in circumference. Calculate the equivalent number of centimeters?

7. Determine the length of the diameter in inches and centimeters using the formula, c=pd.

8. What is the length of the radius in inches and centimeters?

9. Determine the surface area of the soccer ball, using the formula for surface area of a sphere. A=4/3pr2 in inches and centimeters.

10. Calculate the volume of the soccer ball. V=4/3pr3

11. Soccer field sizes vary from 100 to 130 yards long (touch lines) and 50 to 100 yards wide (goal lines). Convert these measurements to meters.

 12. Find the minimum and maximum perimeters of a field. Express the results as an inequality.

minimum<perimeter<maximum

13. Calculate the minimum and maximum area of the field. Express these results as an inequality.

minimum<area<maximum

14. Goals are in the center of the goal lines. The distance between the goalposts is 24 ft.; these are joined at the top by a crossbar that is 8 ft. above ground. Express the distance between the goalposts in yards and meters. Express the height above the ground in meters.

15. The goalkeeper cannot be charged in the goal area which is a rectangular area 20 yards wide and extending 6 yards in front of the goal. Calculate this rectangular area.

16. The penalty area, in front of the goal measures 44 yards wide

and extends 18 yards in front of the goal. Calculate this rectangular area.

17. The kickoff is from the center spot which is a point in the middle of the halfway line. Opponents must be at least 10 yards away from the ball. What would be the circumference of this circle? What is the area of this circle?

18. On a sheet of unlined paper, make a scale drawing of a soccer field. Include goals, goal area, penalty area, halfway line, and kickoff circle.
