Note To Teachers

Thank you for your interest in my little facility project. The project can be used for grades 6-9. The first time I used it was with a directed studies math class(primarily 9th graders). However, this project is fun for middle school math students as well. I have found that my students love it and want more like it. I am presently working on some other projects to make them happy.

As you work through the activities, you will probably find that some students who have not had much experience with the internet will have difficulties getting started. You may want to go over the basics of how to search on the internet and provide them with a few addresses as examples. Most of your students will amaze you with the information they find and the facilities they create.

In the envelope with your project booklet is a survey and self-addressed envelope. I am always monitoring and adjusting my teaching methods. If you would, after you have completed the project, please give me some feedback on it. If anyone comes up with some good suggestions, I will change or add to the project accordingly. I am presently working on getting this, as well as some other projects, where they can be downloaded for free from the internet. Once this is completed, I will let you know by mail or e-mail.

Please feel free to also e-mail me with any questions or comments at tcbnf1@aol.com

Remember, there are no copyrights on any of these activities. So, feel free to copy and share with anyone you know.

Hope you have as much fun as my classes did!

Sincerely,

Terry Carter

Activity 1

HOW MUCH IS THE COST OF AN AVERAGE FACILITY?

Name ______________ Date________

Just about every day, we hear about a city building a new type of facility that costs some very large amount of money. In this activity, you will need to find at least 10 such facilities and how much it cost to build them (in today's dollars if possible). Make sure you find similar facilities to the one you are going to build in your town (we want to compare stadium costs to stadium costs, arena costs to arena costs, etc.). Also, find out how many seats are in each facility and record it on your worksheet. After you do some research and get this data, complete the worksheet and lets get a ballpark figure for the facility that you're going to build in your hometown.

Suggestions:

1) Do a search on the internet of stadiums and costs. Some sights will have some of the information needed, but you will probably have to look a little farther to find all the information.

2) If you know the name of a similar facility, search the internet for information on that specific facility.

3) If the internet is not available, search through old newspapers and magazines to find your data.

Questions:

1. What was the highest cost per seat for a facility?__________ Where was it located?______________ Why do you think this facility had a higher ratio than the others? ________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. What was the lowest cost per seat for a facility?__________ Where was it located?______________ Why do you think this facility had a lower ratio than the others? ________________________________________________________________

3. HYPOTHESIS: What do you think has the highest percentage of cost (concrete, steel, land, planning, etc....) in the total cost of a facility?_______________________________

WHAT DO WE NEED IN THIS PLACE ?

Name ______________________ Date __________

Every time we go to a facility, there is usually something special about the facility that stands out in our minds. Sometimes it can be something as simple as the ivy at Wrigley Field. Now is your chance to be creative and brainstorm a list of amenities you would like to have at your facility. If you need some help to get started, go back to the list of facilities you compiled in Activity 1 and see what it is that makes these facilities unique and special. List as many amenities you would like to have (at least 15) in the spaces below.

THE VISION

Name ________________________ Date _________

By now, you have seen some pretty impressive facilities as well as some that border on simply pathetic and outdated. Now is your chance to get creative! it is your job to design a facility and create a scaled image of what it will look like when completed. Make sure you include at least three different points of view so that we admirers can get a complete glimpse of your vision. This drawing will be used as a basis for your model when you begin construction in Activity 7.

Note: These images are here to help you see different perspectives. Your drawings will probably be much, much better!

Activity 4

WHERE WILL IT BE LOCATED?

Name ______________________ Date ________

How many times have you attended an event at a facility and thought to yourself, "self, why did they put this place here" ? Well, now is your chance to show everybody that you can plan as well, if not better, than the people have done before you! In this activity, you will need to do a little research to find the best place to put your facility in your area. After you find your little slice of Utopia, create a map (there are a lot of places on the internet that will generate one for you - Yahoo! has a pretty good one) and try to get an estimate on how much the land would cost if you were to buy it.

Questions:

1. Write a brief explanation of why you chose this location as indicated by your map.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Are roads already in place to accommodate traffic or will you need some alterations to the streets to allow traffic to flow smoothly to and from the facility? Explain.

3. How much do you think it will cost to buy the land? How did you get this price?

4. Will you need to construct parking garages at this location, or is there enough space already available? Explain.

HOW MANY SEATS DO WE NEED ?

Name ________________________ Date __________

How many times have you attended an event that was sold out? not sold out? What we need to do now is a little research and see how many seats you will need at your facility. First, you will need to look at other facilities in your area and look at the capacity for each. Next, try to get an idea of the ratio of people in your area to the number of seats. After you look at these and fill in the information below, we need to get some market comparisons to similar facilities that we used in Activity 1. After comparing all of these, make an estimate of how many seats your facility will need. (Note: you may want to figure your population numbers on a 50 mile radius of the towns)

Activity 6

WHO'S GOING TO PAY FOR THIS THING ?

Name ______________________ Date _________

Being the multi-billionaire you are, you could probably finance the construction of your facility and still have enough money left over for a seven-course meal at the local burger hut. However, most communities do not have individuals like yourself to pay for the costs associated with a facility. What you will need to do in this activity is a little research and find out how other places have financed their facilities (at least 3). After you do your research, come up with a plan that you can sell to the people in your area that will provide the necessary funding to construct your awesome facility.

THE MAKING OF A MODEL

Name _____________________ Date ____________

Now that you have the idea, the plans and the funds, it is time for us to start construction. What you need to do in this activity is make a detailed list of what you will need for constructing your model (popsicle sticks, posterboard, cardboard, paint, etc...). If your teacher is supplying the materials, thank him/ her very much! If they are not, make sure you choose things that you can get easily at the store or home. Using your drawing from Activity 3, list below what you will need, how much and the purpose of each. Once you have the necessary materials, let the construction commence!

WHO'S HOUSE IS THIS ANYWAY ?

Name ___________________ Date _________

You have done a superb job in designing, planning and creating your facility! Everything is now in place....except for one thing. Why is anyone going to come to your facility? In this activity, you will need to create a schedule of events for one year. Try to utilize as much time as you can. List the date, time, activity and ticket price ( you can estimate these by looking at ticket prices in your area and other towns). I can't wait to see what you'll have cooking at your facility!
