FTP USING WS_FTP FOR WINDOWS

NOTE: Read the following instructions carefully. Don't be discouraged by their length. The process is not difficult and every effort has been made to attend to detail.

Downloading WS_FTP

To transfer files to and from Voyager requires that you have a File Tranfer Protocol (FTP) program. VolWeb suggests you use WS_FTP. If you do not have WS_FTP on your computer you may download it from:

It will be necessary for you to be able to "unzip" these files to correctly install and run WS_FTP.

Configuring WS_FTP

1. Launch WS_FTP to get to the configuraton dialogue box.

2. Fill in the Configuration areas with the following information:

FIRST: DESELECT ANONYMOUS LOGIN!!

PROFILE NAME:	VolWeb
HOST NAME:	voyager.rtd.utk.edu
HOST TYPE:	UNIX(Standard)
USER ID:	your volweb userid
PASSWORD:	your volweb password
ACCOUNT:	leave blank
REMOTE HOST:	leave blank
LOCAL PC:	leave blank
COMMENT:	leave blank

3. Select:	AUTO SAVE CONFIGURE
4. Select:	SAVE PASSWORD (if you are the only one with access to this computer--otherwise, leave your password area blank--and do not save your password.)
5. Select:	SAVE at the top of the dialogue box above Host Name
6. Click OK

Uploading Files to Voyager with WS_FTP

1. Connect to the VolWeb server via WS_FTP.

2. You will connect to a split screen. The left hand screen is providing information about your PC.

The top half of the screen is detailing information about your DIRECTORIES. The bottom half of the screen is detailing information about the FILES in your directories.

3. The right hand side is providing you with information about YOUR account on Voyager.

The top half of the screen will have a section called public_html. As long as you can see public_html in the top half of the Voyager screen you are at ROOT.

DOUBLE CLICK ON PUBLIC_HTML.

4. You are now in YOUR public_html area of YOUR section of Voyager--and are ready to upload or download files into/out of your public_html area.

5. On the left hand side of the screen double click on the directory you are working from on your PC.

6. To upload a file from your PC to Voyager:

highlight the file that you want to transfer
make sure the correct file transfer mode is selected

At the bottom of the window are the radio buttons for selecting the type of file you are transfering. To transfer .htm files always use ASCII. To transfer .gif or .jpg files ALWAYS use BINARY.

select the arrow pointing from left to right
you will see the file appear alphabetically on Voyager's side of your screen.

7. Congratulations!! You have just uploaded a file to Voyager!!

Downloading Files from Voyager with WS_FTP

1. To download a file from Voyager to your PC:

highlight the file that you want to transfer from Voyager to your PC
make sure the correct area of your PC is selected to transfer to
make sure the correct file transfer mode is selected

At the bottom of the window are the radio buttons for selecting the type of file you are transfering. To transfer .htm files always use ASCII.To transfer .gif or .jpg files ALWAYS use BINARY.

hit the arrow pointing from right to left
you will see the file appear alphabetically on the PC side of your screen.

2. Congratulations!! You have just downloaded a file from Voyager!!

When you have completed your file transfers--EXIT.

Additional Tips

1. Remember to name all files lower case. Even though Windows '95 allows for longer file names, WS_FTP does not. Keep all file name to 8 characters and all file extensions to 3 characters, example: .htm, .gif, .jpg.

2. Files can be deleted from either your PC area or Voyager using the DELETE key in the corresponding menu.

highlight the file you wish to delete

hit the DELETE key

Word of caution: advise that you not have files highlighted on BOTH sides at the same time--and hit the delete key. You could be surprised!!

3. You can RENAME files using WS_FTP on your PC and on Voyager.

4. If you want to erase the highlighting on files--REFRESH.

5. If you want to see the file text--VIEW.
