
Van Buren County, formed in 1840 from parts of White, Warren, and Bledsoe Counties, is named for Martin Van Buren. The county seat is Spencer. One of the first co-educational colleges in the South, Burritt College, was founded here in 1848. Most of the county is located on the Cumberland Plateau except for the coves and valleys of the northern and western sections.
Formed in 1980, chartered with the state of Tennessee, meets on the 1st Monday night of each month.
