The word blizzard is defined as: An intensly strong, cold wind filled with fine snow.
Snow doesn't always accompany blizzards.
Wind must be 35 m.p.h. or greater with visibilities of 1/4 of a mile for a long period of time, usually greater than 3 hours.
The National Weather Service issues a blizzard warning when these conditions are expected. If a less severe, yet still dangerous winter storm is coming, a winter storm watch or winter storm warning is issued.
