Most people don't realize that El Nino occurs as
often, and has as much effect on the climate as it does. Actually, the
most recent El Nino that had a large effect on the climate of the U.S.
was the El Nino of 1982-83. It began in November and December, causing
unusually warm weather. It then struck with a harsh blizzard in February.
Before that, in '77-'78, it caused bitter winter storms. Earlier, in
'72-'73, it caused unsteady, cold weather with many storms and cloud systems.
The El Nino of '97-'98 has been one of the harshest ever recorded.
