If a Hurricane is headed towards a specific
place, a Hurriane Watch is issued for that
area. Sometimes a watch is issued several
days in advance before the arrival of the
hurricane. When a Hurricane is expected to
hit an area within 24 hours a Hurrican Warning
is issued. Even with advanced warnings thousands
of people die from hurricanes each year. The
increase in ocean tides associated with a hurricane
is called the "surge" of the hurricane. This
often produces much damage due to the great ocean
waves pounding structures near the water.
Flooding is a problem with hurricanes. Hurricanes
often produce up to 50 cm of rain in a 24hr Period.
Thanks to a special runoff system, many citys
next to the ocean will withstand a large increase
in rain. Tornados are also spun off from the
hurricane, causing damage. So if a hurricane
watch is issued it never hurts to take your
vacation far from the ocean!
