Only one out of 500,000 people are killed by lightning and only about one
in 125,000 people are injured. This must seem to be some very long odds to you but not to
a unlucky Park Ranger in Virginia. This Park Ranger's name is Roy C. Sullivan. He was struck
by lightning EIGHT TIMES before his death, and he died not because of lightning but of natural
causes. In the eight times he has been struck by lightning, he lost his big toe in 1942, his
eyebrows in 1969, his hair was set on fire twice, and the other times he was slightly burned.
