Hyperstudio Lesson Plan

1. Unit Goal:

The student will develop an understanding of ways to resolve a conflict.

2. Instructional Objectives:

The student will compare three ways to resolve a conflict.
The student will answer questions concerning each way to resolve a conflict.

3. Set:

Ask students if anyone has ever found themselves in a sticky situation. How did you work it out? Alone or did someone help you out? Discuss what a conflict is. Tell students that a lot of kids think that fighting is the only way to resolve a conflict; however, it doesn't have to be that way. Ask students if they know what the word mediate means. Discuss what a mediator does.

4. Instruction:

Have hyperstudio program prepared prior to lesson. Create stack with title screen, help card, navagational buttons, menu card with at least 3 options, information cards for each option, and follow-up questions. Allow for self-checking and reinforcement.

Options on menu card might include the following choices:

Ways to Resolve a Conflict

1. involving peers
2. one-on-one
3. with violence

Explain to students that they will be going through a computer lesson that will introduce them to the benefits of using peers as mediators and that they should let their minds become sponges and soak up the knowledge. Tell students that they will be going through the program at computer centers. Demonstrate how to navigate. Answer any questions students may have concerning program mechanics.

5.Closure:

After each child has had a chance to complete the program, discuss similarities and differences in the choices each made. Ask if anyone has comments on which way is the best way to resolve a conflict.

6.Reminders:

Any special circumstances?

Children with special needs?

7.Self-Evaluation:

What would you do differently?

What were the successes?

What were the problems?
