Panel Proposal: “Crossing Borders and International Exchange”

I have been fortunate to receive residencies in the Columbus, Ohio/ Dresden, Germany artists exchange from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council and Grafikwerks/ Dresden printmaking exchange. The latter exchange has led to two subsequent projects in Dresden working with German printmakers. The projects have included an international exhibition of work by printmakers form both countries, the production of a bilingual catalogue by the Ohio Arts Council to accompany the exhibition, the production of an exhibition poster in Dresden for the exhibition in the USA created in collaboration with a German artist and a German print studio.

All of these activities have aspects that are worthy of a panel discussion. Examples include:  The roles of artists, sponsors, collaborations, common and differing expectations, on-going relationships, artists’ individual initiatives, building new partnerships, funding and continuing exchanges, common challenges for artists.

If I were invited to participate, I would work with the Ohio Arts Council to present information that addresses these questions and others related to them. Tapping the resources of the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council would enable me to present both my first-hand experiences and data collected from multiple exchanges that could contribute to a matrix of data helpful to the largest possible audience.

Certainly, images of works created by American and German artists as well as comments from them would complement the presentation.

I hope to return to Dresden in December of 2005 for my sixth grant-funded visit since 1998. These on-going collaborations, have afforded me a wealth of lessons-learned both by my peers in the exchange programs and me.

I have attached my CV. If you have additional questions or need additional information please contact me at: Nhill@otterbein.edu
