SYLLABUS AND COURSE INFORMATION

The textbook for this course is  Marc Loudon, Organic Chemistry, 4th edition.  Dr. Loudon has compiled two lists of errors, one for the TEXTBOOK and one for the  STUDY GUIDE and has posted them at his own web site.  If you'll let me know about other errors that you find, I'll be pleased to report them to him (you'll notice that he does give credit to those who find the errors).  I'll also add them to our course web site for both TEXTBOOK and STUDY GUIDE.    (Loudon's TEXTBOOK ERRORS were updated on February 1, 2006; his STUDY GUIDE ERRORS were updated on February 9, 2006.)  The list of TEXTBOOK errors at our course web site was updated on December 22, 2005.  The list of STUDY GUIDE errors at our course web site was updated on December 22, 2005.

Much of the material that was covered in Chem. 350 with the textbook that we used from 2002 to 2004 (Bruice, "Organic Chemistry," 3rd ed.) will also be covered in Chem. 350 with the new text (Loudon, see above); the same is true for Chem. 360.  There are, however, a few topics from the old Chem. 350 coverage that UT's organic students will not get to until Chem. 360; and there are some topics that will be covered in Chem. 350 that formerly didn't appear until Chem. 360.  For the benefit of those who began their study of Chem. 350 or Chem. 360 with the Bruice book, I've prepared a TABLE that shows which topics are covered where.

You'll also find an extensive set of ANIMATIONS at Dr. Loudon's web site.  These are organized according to chapter in the textbook.  Whether you choose to use these animations to help you learn the material is up to you - try a few and see what you think of them.  They not only show pictures of molecules in motion (during rotation and during reactions) but often have tutorials in which pertinent questions are asked.

In my Chem. 360 class from Spring 2002, several students found an "interesting" way to unwind after one of their hour exams: THEY DECORATED A ONCE-WHITE VAN WITH EQUATIONS AND FORMULAS RELATED TO THE MATERIAL THAT THEY HAD BEEN STUDYING.  This well-decorated van made a few appearances on campus; the DAILY BEACON promised to do a story on it, but failed to follow through.   In the event that you were not fortunate enough to see the van that had been transformed into THE MAGID MOBILE, here are some pictures.  We have a front view, side view (passenger's side), rear view, and side view (driver's side).   The mutation occurred at a birthday party for one of the participants, who also put an interesting sign on his lawn identifying his house.

Alas, the ne'er-do-wells, malcontents, and miscreants who defaced the formerly all-white van couldn't resist posing in front of the vehicle, thus obscuring some of the writing.   Nevertheless, the chemistry that's visible is accurate, albeit marred by two chair cyclohexanes in which nearly every equatorial and axial bond is incorrectly drawn - rest assured that the Chem. 350 grade of this student has now been changed.

For those who would like to see views of the MAGID MOBILE, unsullied by the students who painted it, here are pictures of the front (with students off to the side), passenger's side, rear, and driver's side; and here is the sign, with a somewhat different mix of students in standing nearby.

FOR NO PARTICULARLY GOOD REASON, EXCEPT THAT I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHERE ELSE TO PUT THEM, I'M ATTACHING LINKS TO TRAVEL SAGAS THAT ARE OF PROBABLY LITTLE INTEREST TO ANYONE BUT ME AND A FEW OTHER MISGUIDED SOULS.  IN SUMMER, 2000, MY WIFE AND I VISITED HUNGARY, AUSTRIA, GERMANY, AND CZECH REPUBLIC; AND IN 2001 WE SPENT THREE WEEKS IN THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS.  (WE MADE NO OVERSEAS TRIPS DURING THE GEORGE W. BUSH ADMINISTRATION, NOT WISHING TO HAVE TO ANSWER FOR HIS POLICIES.)  IN 2009, WE RESUMED OUR TRAVELS BY TOURING IRELAND AND WALES.  IN 2010, WE MADE TWO TRIPS: NEW ZEALAND (IN FEBRUARY) AND A BALTIC CRUISE/DENMARK DRIVE (IN AUGUST).  IN 2011, WE VISITED FRANCE (NOTABLY THE LOIRE VALLEY AND BRETAGNE).  IN SUMMER 2012, WE VISITED NORTHERN EUROPE (ICELAND, FAROE AND SHETLAND ISLANDS, NORWAY, NETHERLANDS, BELGIUM).  IN DECEMBER 2012, WE VISITED GERMANY (BERLIN, NÜRNBERG, AND HEIDELBERG) IN SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013, WE DID A DRIVING TOUR OF ENGLAND AND A CRUISE ON THE RHINE.  IN MARCH-APRIL 2014, WE SPENT FOUR WEEKS IN AUSTRALIA.  IN SEPTEMBER 2014, WE CRUISED THE COAST OF NORWAY FROM OSLO TO THE SVALBARD PENINSULA.   IN MARCH 2015, WE SPENT A WEEK IN LONDON AND ANOTHER WEEK IN DEVON AND CORNWALL.  IN SEPTEMBER 2015, WE VISITED VENICE, CRUISED THE ADRIATIC, DROVE THROUGH THE BLACK FOREST, AND CRUISED THE RHÔNE.   IN APRIL 2016, WE VISITED JAPAN.   IN 2018, WE TOURED SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN ENGLAND IN MAY; AND WE CRUISED FROM ENGLAND TO FRANCE, SPAIN, AND PORTUGAL IN SEPTEMBER.   IN MAY 2019, WE TOURED NETHERLANDS AND BELGIUM, THEN CRUISED ALONG THE COAST OF IRELAND. IN MARCH, 2020, WE HAD HOPED TO SPEND A MONTH IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND, BUT THE CORONA VIRUS CAUSED US TO ABORT THE TRIP ABOUT HALF-WAY THROUGH; WE NEVER GOT TO NEW ZEALAND.   FOLLOWING THE COVID-IMPOSED HIATUS, WE TRAVELED TO AMSTERDAM TO BEGIN A CRUISE ALONG THE RHINE AND DANUBE IN MAY-JUNE, 2022.  AND IN OCTOBER, 2022, WE TOOK A CRUISE FROM NEW YORK CITY TO MONTREAL.   IN JANUARY, 2023, WE TOOK A CRUISE THAT WOULD SAIL AROUND THE TWO ISLANDS OF NEW ZEALAND, THEN HEAD TO AUSTRALIA.  TWO EVENTS MARRED OUR PLEASURE: (1) OUR LUGGAGE DIDN'T ARRIVE UNTIL NINE DAYS INTO THE CRUISE; AND (2) OUR SHIP WAS DENIED COMING TO THREE PORTS IN NEW ZEALAND BECAUSE ITS HULL WAS CONTAMINATED WITH FOREIGN MARINE MATTER AND BARNACLES.

IN THE FOLLOWING TRAVELOGUES, THE OBSERVATIONS THAT I RECORDED (ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND THEIR CUSTOMS, THE COUNTRYSIDE, THE FOOD, THE ACCOMMODATIONS, ETC.) MIGHT BE MILDLY AMUSING TO THOSE WITH WARPED SENSES OF HUMOR OR MIGHT SERVE AS SOPORIFICS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TROUBLE FALLING ASLEEP.

AS FOR PHOTOS FROM THESE TRIPS, I HAVE A SAD STORY.  PRIOR TO 2016, I HAD USED PICASA TO UPLOAD PICTURES, SORT THEM INTO ALBUMS, AND SHARE THEM WITH EXTERNAL VIEWERS.  IN 2017, GOOGLE (WHO IS/ARE? ALL-POWERFUL) BOUGHT PICASA AND DISCONTINUED IT.  SO, PHOTOS TAKEN SINCE 2016 WERE UPLOADED, INSTEAD, TO MY GOOGLE PHOTOS FOLDER https://tinyurl.com/y7sbtg3t.
THIS WEB SITE IS NOT LONGER ACCESSIBLE TO OUTSIDE VIEWERS.

THERE IS, HOWEVER, A SOLUTION!!  IF YOU CLICK ON TRAVEL ALBUM, YOU WILL REACH A PAGE THAT ALLOWS CONNECTIONS TO ALL OF THE TRAVEL PHOTOS SINCE 2000.
