Videos of panels and presentations from the Remote Contact Virtual Printmaking Symposium are now posted on the UT Knoxville School of Art Vimeo page. We are currently in the process of adding closed captioning.

Please note that the presentation by Kelli Wood and Sean Roberts on “Playing Cards as Drivers for the Development of Print in Europe” will be uploaded at a later date.

Remote Contact was a student-led virtual printmaking symposium intended to provide a forum for students in printmaking. During the global pandemic, many of us were cut off from our friends and colleagues in the printmaking world. “Contact” is essential to printmaking—whether it is the contact that takes place between the inked matrix and a sheet of paper, or the ways that the printed multiple fosters contact with fellow artists and the public more broadly. Even as we could not meet in person, our social need for contact continued to be at the core of printmaking and our experience as humans. With “remote” technologies we could still make contact while ensuring public health and safety. During our collective health crisis, this virtual printmaking symposium sought to help students make artistic, cultural, technical, philosophical, and creative contacts with one another.

The symposium brought together a tremendous variety of current and recent students, from undergraduates to PhDs from Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The symposium was free of charge.

Remote Contact Virtual Printmaking Symposium was supported through
the Betsy Worden Printmaking Endowment and Friends of UTK Printmaking.

Though the symposium has passed, the content of this website has been archived as a resource for printmaking students.
